In Brdy Nature Park, Czech Republic, officials had been planning since 2018 to build a dam and restore wetlands damaged by old military drainage systems.
The project carried an estimated price tag of 30 million Czech crowns, about $1.2 million.
Years passed. Nothing was built.
Then the beavers showed up.
In January 2025, a colony of Eurasian beavers began building natural dams in the same area, slowing the water, rewetting the floodplain, and helping the wetland recover without a construction crew or government budget.
As water returned, so did life. Fish, amphibians, birds, insects, and wetland plants began benefiting from the restored habitat.
Seven years of planning. Millions in estimated costs. Then nature stepped in and did the job for free.
No budget. No delays. Just beavers doing what beavers do best. 🦫💚
